Life Events and Coverage Changes

Life changes can affect your health coverage. Certain events allow you to enroll in or update benefits outside of the regular enrollment period.

What is a Qualifying Life Event?

A qualifying life event is a major change in your life that impacts your health coverage needs and may allow a Special Enrollment Period.

Most changes must be submitted within 31 days of the event. Newborns may be added within 60 days of birth.

Common Qualifying Life Events

A Qualifying Life Event lets you change your benefits outside of open enrollment.

Marriage is a qualifying life event, so you can add your spouse outside of open enrollment. Submit your change in UKG within 30 days. You will need a copy of your marriage license or certificate. If you are adding a working spouse, review the Working Spouse Policy and include any required documentation from their employer. Remember to review and update your beneficiaries.

Divorce is a qualifying life event. Submit your change in UKG within 30 days. You will need a copy of your divorce decree signed by the judge. Be sure to update your beneficiaries and review coverage for any affected dependents.

If you move, update your address and personal information in UltiPro so your records and communications stay current. Check that your doctors and pharmacy are still in-network in your new area using the BCBS of Alabama app or bcbsal.org.

The loss of a covered dependent or family member is a qualifying life event and may allow you to update your benefits. Submit your change in UltiPro as soon as possible. Through Prudential’s Financial Point Plus program, beneficiaries and terminally ill employees with approved claims can access no-cost financial counseling, including a personalized financial planning report and a 24/7 financial planning hotline. You can review life insurance beneficiaries in UltiPro and 401(k) beneficiaries at 401k.com.

Losing other coverage is a qualifying life event. Submit your change in UKG within 30 days. You will need a letter or document stating the date coverage was terminated and what coverage ended. If your spouse gains coverage elsewhere, provide a letter from their employer stating the effective dates of employment and coverage. A child reaching the maximum eligible age, or a dependent becoming eligible or ineligible for coverage, also counts.

Welcoming a child is a qualifying life event. Add a newborn within 60 days of birth, and other dependents within 30 days. For a birth you will need the hospital application, the child’s birth certificate and Social Security card. For an adoption you will need the executed adoption papers and Social Security card. Do not forget to update your beneficiaries.
